I wanted to tell you about a very exciting campaign that is going to be happening during Childrens' Mental Health Awareness Week (May 1-7 2011).  It is called Speak Up for Kids.

Speak Up for Kids, sponsored by the Child Mind Institute (CMI) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), along with Hunter Boot and Parents magazine, aims to have hundreds of mental health professionals deliver talks about child mental health to teachers and in communities across the United States.

These talks will educate parents and teachers about the signs and symptoms of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders and point them to helpful resources in their local areas.  The aim of this program is to help destigmatize psychiatric and learning disorders and enable millions of adults to recognize the signs of anxiety, ADHD, and depression, as well as the risk factors for suicide.

In support of this campaign, I am volunteering my time to do presentations to schools, houses of worship, after-school programs, etc.  If you know of any such organization or school that is interested in a Speak Up For Kids presentation, please do not hesitate to contact me through this website.

For more information, to learn about a presentation near you, or to learn how you can present as well, please visit the Child Mind Institute's Speak Up for Kids page

Recovery Is Possible

Living With Mental Illness

December 7, 2010          9:00am – 11:00am

610 Valley Health Plaza, Conference Room, Paramus NJ

Cost: $20.00 (Professional Development Certificate Available)

Whether you work in the mental health field, or know someone who is struggling with their mental health, this is a presentation designed to give you hope.  So often when a client, relative, or friend is struggling, it is hard to see the “light at the end of the tunnel.”  You wonder not just if they will get better, but if they can get better.

Workshop participants will learn first hand what it is like to struggle with a mental illness.  At the age of 18, Emily was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, and this began a seven year struggle to regain her stability.  In this presentation, she will give a brief description of her struggles, but will focus mostly on explaining how she was able to recover, graduate from both college and graduate school, and find a highly satisfying career.

She will reference her newly published book There and Back Again, and describe some of the techniques that she used to both get well and stay well.  It is her mission to spread a message that people with mental illness can live productive, satisfying, and most importantly, happy lives.

Workshop Participants Will:

·      Develop an understanding of what it is like to struggle with a mental illness

·      Learn the techniques that assist one in recovering and staying well.

·      Learn the importance of self-advocacy in the recovery process

·      Learn how clinicians, family, and friends can support someone who is struggling with a mental illness

·      Learn that recovery and full re-integration into society is highly possible for those that struggle with a mental illness

·      Learn about the Consumer-Provider movement and how those in recovery from a mental illness are helping their peers to recover and stay well.
